Football Coach Chan Gailey Speaks at Rotary

The Toccoa Rotary Club welcomed a special guest speaker to Tuesday’s lunch meeting at Gate Cottage on the campus of Toccoa Falls College. Former professional and college football coach Chan Gailey spoke to the club and guests about the current state of football and his past in the game.

Gailey led Troy to the 1984 NCAA Division II National Championship and coached in four Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers. He coached for seven different NFL teams during his 46-year career, including head coaching stints with the Dallas Cowboys and Buffalo Bills. He also was the head coach at Ga. Tech from 2002-2007.

Gailey told the group that one of the questions that he is asked is who was the best player that he coached?

Gailey also said that today’s college football featuring the transfer portal and NIL (student athlete Name Image and Likeness contract options) is not ideal for coaches. He said that during his career he preferred coaching in the professional ranks because it provided more family time.

Gailey last coached professionally in 2021 and currently lives in Habersham County.
