BOE deciding, tonight, to fund cannery

The Stephens County Board of Education will meet this evening to discuss allocating funds to the Eastanollee Cannery.

Last week, during the BOE’s work session, Board Member Mark Smith suggested the board create a line item for the cannery.

“We need to adjust our budget to fund the cannery for the next year,” Smith said. “Nobody knows exactly what it’ll cost, but I think we need to put enough in there to not have to address it again. And if, for whatever reason, we did, then we would look at that, but that is just my suggestion.”

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey suggested $50,000 would keep the cannery open until the end of this Fiscal Year.

The BOE will vote on the recommendation during its regular scheduled meeting tonight, Aug. 21, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

In other business, the BOE will vote to adopt an amendment to its Charter System Contract Term.

The amendment will align the Charter Term with the AdvancED accreditation term, allowing both to expire the same day, June 30, 2020.
