7th Plaque Dedicated In Historic Downtown Toccoa

State Farm (Army Surplus Store)Main Street Toccoa installed the 7th of 10 Historic Plaques this past Thursday. The plaque was placed on the building that is currently the office of Mike Van Minos State Farm Insurance on Sage Street. Main Street’s Weslie Clark explains the dedication. “This building has been home to a bowling alley, a furniture store, a taxi company on the adjacent side, and an army surplus store. It stands today as an example of the vernacular style of architecture.”

The next plaque dedication will be this Thursday, May 7th at 49 East Doyle Street at the front of First Franklin Financial. That location was first built around 1946 as Simmons General Store, but was best known for housing Gower Furniture, and then Hudgins Furniture , for 63 years of Toccoa’s history.

The historic plaque program highlights ten historic buildings in Toccoa. After 1st Franklin Financial this Thursday, the final two plaque installations will be installed on the Raybon OB-GYN buildings located at 79 Doyle Street and 147 Pond Street in June.

Once all plaques have been installed, a walking tour podcast will accompany them to further bring historical awareness to downtown Toccoa.
