Woman Killed When Struck By Train

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said on Saturday that a woman was killed after being struck by a train in Stephens County.

Shirley said that at 6 p.m. Friday, 911 dispatch contacted the Sheriff’s Office and reported that a Norfolk Southern cargo train had struck a pedestrian near the Stonewall Court bridge located in the area of the airport.

Shirley said the train was heading east toward South Carolina.

According to the sheriff, the train engineer said he observed two people on the tracks and sounded the horn several times.

However, according to the engineer, the male individual moved to the other side of the track but the female was bent down and did not move from the track.

Shirley said the train was not able to stop but did everything within their power to alarm the female by using both the horn and flashing its lights.

The sheriff said the female was struck by the left side of the train, was thrown off the tracks onto the shoulder area, and was killed instantly from blunt force trauma.

The victim’s identity was not released Saturday by the Sheriff’s Ofice.
