Winter Storm Headed This Way, Say Forecasters

Stephens County faces a winter storm warning later today as the potential is there for a major snow storm.

The winter storm warning is set to take effect for the region at 4 p.m. today and last through 7 a.m. Thursday.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Danny Gant said that precipitation is expected to start as rain later this morning or during the early afternoon hours.

“It will likely start out as rain and continue until late afternoon,” said Gant.

The snow changeover, he said, could occur around 4 or 5 p.m.

Gant said once it changes over to snow later today, it will remain as snow throughout the evening, but could change back to rain before the storm ends Thursday morning sometime.

As far as totals go, Gant said that it can be difficult to pin that down.

However, he said as of right now, Stephens County is expected to see a significant snowfall.

“There is a decent amount of uncertainty as to where the rain-snow line sets up,” said Gant. “We think it is going to be to the south (of Toccoa). We have around 5 to 7 inches (projected for Toccoa).”
