Wilkinson Responds to Trump Committee Appointment

50th District State Senator John Wilkinson said he is honored to serve on the Agricultural Advisory Committee formed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“Just the fact that Mr. Trump would name an Agricultural Advisory Committee, I think it is an indication that he realizes the importance that agriculture plays in our country and important role it plays in our state,” said Wilkinson.

On Tuesday, the Trump campaign named Wilkinson as one of the 65 men and women on the Agricultural Advisory Committee, joining other Georgians including current Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue.

Wilkinson currently serves as the Chairman of the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee in the Georgia State Senate.

He said he has known several individuals on the committee for years and they reached out to him about being a part of the committee and he agreed.

In announcing the committee, Trump’s campaign said that the members of this committee are tasked with providing new ideas to strengthen the nation’s agricultural industry, as well as provide support to rural communities.

Wilkinson said he hopes they can provide valuable input to Mr. Trump.

“I think one of the important roles the committee will play as far as the campaign is concerned is maybe just give Mr. Trump some input on rural America on some of the issues, not just agriculture,” said Wilkinson. “Agriculture is very important. Of course, agriculture is the number one industry in our state and the number one industry in our country, but I think also some of the issues that face rural America today, healthcare, jobs for our young people, and those kinds of things.”

Wilkinson said he is looking forward to the opportunity and hopes to be able to provide input and that it will be a benefit to northeast Georgia.
