50th District State Senator John Wilkinson will serve on the State Senate’s School Discipline Study Committee.
Georgia Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle appointed Wilkinson to that committee last week.
Over the next several months, this study committee will review the type of punishments imposed by various school systems, the time spent in alternative schools by students in various school systems and the high rate of expulsion of students.
Wilkinson said he looks forward to meeting with his colleagues throughout the summer to research current discipline trends and brainstorm new ideas for the betterment of students and educators.
The Stephens County Republican state senator said that while discipline is necessary, it is imperative that we review the processes by which students are punished to ensure that the punishment fits the crime.
The Senate School Discipline Study Committee was created by the passage of Senate Resolution 1200 during the 2014 legislative session.
As stated in the resolution, the committee will also include five other members of the Senate, also appointed by the Lieutenant Governor, and report its findings on or before December 1, 2014.
