Wilbros Controversy Catches Attention of Atlanta TV Station

December 19, 2012

A local controversy is garnering big city attention.

Fox 5 out of Atlanta recently aired a report on the Wilbros odor controversy in Stephens County.

Wilbros, located on Rose Lane near Stephens County Middle School, has been at the center of controversy for nearly two years due to complaints of excessive odor from the facility.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division and Wilbros have agreed to a consent order, calling on Wilbros to take a number of steps that the EPD says are designed to solve the odor problem.

In addition, Stephens County, the city of Toccoa, the Stephens County School District, and a group called the Concerned Citizens of Toccoa-Stephens County, LLC have filed a lawsuit against Wilbros, alleging the odor is interfering with the commercial, residential, economic, and aesthetic interests of the community, as well as causing health issues. Wilbros denies the allegations made in the suit.
