Some City Water Customers Asked to Boil Water After Morning Line Break

A boil water advisory will be in place for about 35 city of Toccoa water customers after a water line break Tuesday morning in Toccoa.

The city of Toccoa said a water connection shutoff is necessary to complete repairs on a ruptured six inch water main located at Clearview Drive and Valley Road.

Work on that line break began at about 7:30 a.m. and was expected to be completed Tuesday, according to city officials.

The city said this water main repair would cause a disruption in water service in the Clearview Drive and Valley Road vicinity.

Officials said when this occurs, a potential health hazard may exist in these areas of zero pressure from backflow and/or back-siphonage of water of unknown quality into the water distribution system.

As a result, the city said that in order to protect the public from a potential health hazard, all citizens in the Clearview Drive and Valley Road area that have experienced water outages and/or low water pressures are advised to “boil” all water prior to use for drinking, cooking, making ice, or preparing baby food.

According to city officials, the water should be boiled for at least one minute after reaching a rolling boil.

The city said citizens in this area should continue to boil their water until they are notified by the city of Toccoa Water Division that the water system has been restored to full operation and that the microbiological quality of the water in the distribution system is safe for human consumption.

City officials said that a separate notice will be provided to involved customers as notification that water services have been restored and the quality of the water is safe for human consumption.

The boil water advisory will have to remain in effect for at least 24 hours, putting it into sometime during the day on Wednesday.
