Update on Hwy. 17 Accident

February 13, 2013

More information is available on an accident last week on Highway 17 in Stephens County that resulted in a fatality.

The accident occurred just after 6 p.m. Thursday around the intersection of Highway 17 and Clary Connector/North Avenue.

According to the Toccoa post of the Georgia State Patrol, the accident involved two vehicles, a 2008 Buick Lucerne driven by 85-year-old Ray Morrison Pace of Marietta, and a 2000 Ford Super Duty driven by 20-year-old Brandon Lee Rogers of Toccoa.

The GSP stated that both vehicles were traveling southbound on Highway 17.

The report stated that Rogers and a witness both told the GSP that Pace then pulled his Buick into the right turn lane and attempted a U-turn as it approached the intersection.

According to the GSP report, Pace failed to yield and pulled into the path of Rogers.

Authorities stated that Rogers attempted to avoid Pace, but the two vehicles collided and the Ford traveled across both lanes of Highway 17, ending up overturned in a roadside ditch on the northbound side of the road.

A passenger in the Buick, 78-year-old Ruth Pace of Marietta, was taken to Habersham Medical Center, but died as a result of the accident.

Meanwhile, Mr. Pace and Rogers were both taken to Stephens County Hospital. Reports indicate that Pace was later transferred to a hospital in Atlanta.

Two passengers in the Ford, 17-year-old Brandon Kyle Taylor of Toccoa and 20-year-old Mark Evan Norton of Toccoa, were both taken to Stephens County Hospital.
