Two SCHS Student-Athletes Sign

Two Stephens County High School student-athletes will continue their athletic careers at the next level.

mighellThursday, Isaiah Mighell and Stephanie Collier both signed to play college sports in ceremonies at the media center at Stephens County High School.

Mighell signed to play football at the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky, a NAIA school.

He said he felt that the school was a good fit all around.

“I found out that they were going to the spread,” said Mighell. “I like that. They are going to pass the ball more. I like their coaches. They are great. One of our coaches is going there. My uncle coaches there.”

Mighell said he will play wide receiver and long snapper in college.

Off the field, Mighell said he wants to work towards being a football coach after college.

Indian Football Head Coach Frank Barden said this is a great opportunity for Mighell.

“A team will reflect its players, especially its seniors,” said Barden. “Our team reflected a lot of what Isaiah is all about. He worked hard. He is a great character kid and very humble. For him to go about his business the way he did from January to the season and for it to pay off the way it did for him. I could not be more proud of him. I could not be more proud of the season he had.”

collierMeanwhile, Collier signed at Brenau University for Competition Cheerleading.

She said there are a number of reasons why she chose Brenau.

“It is close to home,” said Collier. “They offered me to come to a clinic and I just really enjoyed it. The coach is awesome and the girls are just terrific. It is a new future.”

Off the field, Collier said she wants to study nursing.

Stephens County High School Cheerleading Coordinator Cathy Thornton said Collier has been contributing to the competition cheerleading team at the high school since she was a freshman.

“We knew right away she would contribute to our squad,” said Thornton. “She has been on the mat all four years. She is fought through a lot of injuries throughout the four years.”

Thornton also noted Collier’s leadership and talent.

Thornton said they will miss Collier, along with other seniors Ally Brock and Joanna Brown, whose leadership led the competitive cheerleading team, which is coached by Megan Ivester.

Meanwhile, Brenau University’s competitive cheerleading team finished third in the nation at the National Cheerleaders Association college nationals tournament this past year.
