Two Rescued After Fall From Currahee Mountain

A fall off Currahee Mountain over the weekend leaves one person recovering from substantial injuries.

It happened early Saturday morning, according to officials.

Dave Shanks with the Stephens County Search and Rescue Team said that they received a call at a little after 8 a.m. Saturday regarding two individuals who had fallen off of Currahee Mountain.

Shanks said that one of the men had fallen a short distance and landed on a ledge and was not seriously injured.

However, he said the other man had fallen some 60 to 70 feet.

According to Shanks, that man was rescued and had to be transported via helicopter to Gainesville with serious injuries.

No names of the individuals have been released.

Shanks said that the two men who fell did so in an area where the Stephens County Search and Rescue Unit often trains, so the unit was actually already familiar with the area.

He said that Stephens County Search and Rescue had assistance from numerous other agencies.

They include Stephens County EMS, Habersham Technical Response Team, and volunteer fire.
