Two Charged After Attempted Traffic Stop, Chase

Two people from South Carolina face charges after an attempted traffic stop leads to a chase in Stephens County.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley said that deputies were on routine patrol in the area of U.S. Highway 123 on Saturday at about 10 p.m. when they noticed a vehicle with a dealership drive out tag weaving in the lane coming from South Carolina into Toccoa.

Shirley said deputies activated lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle and check on the driver.

The sheriff went on to say that once the emergency lights were activated, the vehicle sped up and began driving erratically.

“A chase ensued,” said Shirley. “As the vehicle turned onto Tugalo Street around Lovers Lane, it lost control and went off the side of the road.”

Shirley said that the people in the vehicle were treated and released for minor injuries.

According to the sheriff, the driver of the vehicle, 37-year-old Jerald R. Greene of Liberty, South Carolina was arrested and charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Possession of Drug Related Objects, Driving Under the Influence, Fleeing and Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, Driving with a Suspended License, and Failure to Maintain Lane.

Also, Shirley said Greene had two active arrest warrants out of South Carolina.

Meanwhile, the sheriff said the passenger in the vehicle, 24-year-old Melissa Sweezy of Easley, South Carolina, was arrested and charged with Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Related Objects, and Giving False Name to Law Enforcement.
