Toccoa To Mark Train Day Saturday

Toccoa is taking time this weekend to celebrate trains.

The city is holding its annual National Train Day festivities on Saturday at the historic train depot on Alexander Street in downtown Toccoa.

Main Street Toccoa Director Connie Tabor said the public is welcome to join city officials as they welcome the Amtrak Crescent line to Toccoa at 6:15 a.m.

“We welcome all visitors and the public to come and watch officials as they board the train,” said Tabor. “We will have prizes we will give away at the event.”

People can register to win those prizes here at the WNEG Radio business office, Ionosphere Travel, or the Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce office at the train depot.

Once the Crescent line pulls in, city officials will also board the train and head southbound to Gainesville to promote Toccoa to those that are on the train.

Tabor said that celebrating National Train Day allows the city to show its appreciation for the railroad and what it does for the community.

“Not only does the National Train Day celebration help focus on the importance of the railroad to Toccoa, it highlights the opportunities that is presented today,” said Tabor. “We are very fortunate to have Amtrak stop (in Toccoa) on its Crescent line. We are one of three in Georgia.”

The city of Toccoa says that each year, more than 30,000 travelers come to Toccoa via train.

Again, National Train Day starts at 6:15 a.m. with the welcoming of the Amtrak Crescent to Toccoa as it heads southbound.

After that will be the drawing for the prizes and there will also be refreshments available.

AM 630 WNEG will broadcast live from Train Day at the historic train depot in downtown Toccoa Saturday morning.
