Toccoa To Dedicate Flagpole At Emory Johnson Park Friday

The city of Toccoa will honor a fallen local hero this coming week.

On Friday, the city will honor the 50th anniversary of the death of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Emory Johnson with the dedication of a flagpole at Emory Johnson Park on West Whitman Street in Toccoa.

Toccoa Main Street Events Coordinator Sharon Crosby said Toccoa named the park for Johnson in 2000 to serve as a reminder of his life, his service, and his family’s loss.

Then in 2011, the Currahee Mountain Detachment 1303 of the Marine Corps League dedicated a granite monument in the park in Johnson’s memory.

Crosby said the public is invited to Friday’s flagpole dedication.

“We really would love to have a lot of community support to show his family how much we appreciate his service,” said Crosby.

The dedication will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Emory Johnson Park on West Whitman Street in Toccoa.
