Toccoa Student Nominated to U.S. Military Academy

A Stephens County student is one of a handful from the region that is nominated for admission to the U.S. Service Academies.

9th District U.S. Representative Doug Collins announced this week that 15 students from the District have been nominated by him for admission to one of the service academies.

Included in that list of 15 is Abigail Vickery of Toccoa.

She has been nominated by Collins for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

In the announcement, Collins said that nominating these 15 great young Georgians for the opportunity to further their educations in the greatest military service academies in the world is a great honor.

Collins added that he knows each of the nominated students has an incredibly bright future ahead and it is his hope that service to the country is only the beginning.

According to the Congressman, the nominees were selected through consultation with a board of veterans and academy alumni in Georgia’s 9th District, led by Lieutenant Colonel Kevin Jarrard of Gainesville and Mr. Michael Brady of Clayton.

Collins’ office said congressional nomination is the rigorous first step to admission in the service academies, which ultimately includes character, scholarship, leadership, physical, and medical assessments by the academies.

Upon graduation, each cadet will be commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant or an Ensign in their respective branch.
