Toccoa Starts New Historic Plaque Series

The city of Toccoa begins a new series of historic plaque dedications in downtown Toccoa.

Main Street unveiled the first historic plaque in its 2015-2016 series last Thursday at the building that currently houses Watson Tire on South Alexander Street.

City officials said this building was built in 1919 and originally housed Carter Wholesale.

According to Main Street, Carter Wholesale provided groceries and building supplies to country stores all over northeast Georgia and was located in the building until 1964.

The city said that in 1966, Fred Watson bought the building and founded Watson Tire, which has been located there since that time.

Toccoa’s historic plaque program highlights 10 historic buildings in Toccoa each year.

One historic plaque is unveiled each month.

City officials said that once all of the plaques have been installed, a walking tour podcast will accompany them to further bring historical awareness to downtown Toccoa.
