Toccoa Purchases Grass for Greens on Golf Course

Toccoa City Commissioners make another purchase to help get the city-owned Pines golf course back open to the public.

Monday, the city commission unanimously approved the purchase of turf grass for the greens at the nine-hole golf course off of Black Mountain Road.

Toccoa City Manager Billy Morse said the installation will take place in June.

“This will give us two full months to grow in before play begins in August,” said Morse.

Morse said the city is following the recommendation of the United States Golf Association when it comes to the greens.

“We have budgeted $30,000 for this purchase,” said Morse. “We were able to get a price of $17,500, well under our budget.”

Two weeks ago, the city commission purchased the equipment necessary to construct a new irrigation system for the greens at the course.

The Pines has been closed to the public since late last summer, when the person who had been operating the course for the city informed the city he could no longer run it.

Toccoa officials say they hope to re-open the golf course to the public in August if all goes according to plan.

Elsewhere Monday, the Toccoa City Commission unanimously approved the purchase of a work truck for the Public Works Department in the amount of $34,534.32 from Mike Jones Ford of Toccoa.

That dealer submitted two bids that were opened at the Toccoa City Commission meeting and this was the lower of the two bids from the dealer.

No other dealers submitted bids.
