Toccoa Preparing for Next Phase of Downtown Streetscape

The city of Toccoa is getting ready to move forward with the next phase of the city’s Streetscape project.

Phase 6 of the city’s Streetscape project involves the alleyway next to WNEG Radio between Alexander and Sage Streets, as well as some of the sidewalk along Alexander Street.

Toccoa Main Street Director Connie Tabor said the main part of the project will involve brick pavers in the alleyway itself.

“The basic streetscape will be a similar application to the past streetscape projects that we have completed,” said Tabor.

Last week, the city commission unanimously approved the Transportation Enhancement Agreement with the Georgia DOT for the Streetscape project.

The city commission also unanimously approved using the firm of Robert and Company for bidding and construction management services.

Now, Tabor said the city waits on the state to give Toccoa permission to move ahead with getting ready for construction.

She said the city has to wait on the consultant to say the city’s project is ready to proceed.

Once that occurs, there will be advertising for bids and then bids will be opened.

There is no date for the project to start yet.

Tabor said once started, the project is expected to take about 150 days to complete.

The total project cost is estimated at $352,569.

Toccoa City Commissioners approved the project in 2012 and received $282,055 in Georgia DOT funds to help pay for the project. Meanwhile, the city put up a 20 percent match on the project of $70,514.

Some of the city’s matching funds have already been spent on the project and the rest of the matching funds are in the city’s current budget.
