Toccoa Police Receive Counterfeit $$ Reports

The Toccoa Police Department is asking area businesses to be on the lookout for counterfeit money this holiday season.

Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell said that the police department has recently seen an uptick in the number of reports of the use or attempted use of counterfeit money.

“The police department has been receiving calls about counterfeit $20’s, $5’s, $10’s, and $100 bills,” said Jarrell. “With the holiday shopping season approaching this week, we are urging our merchants to really check the currency and make sure that it is legit.”

So far, Jarrell said the police has received about five or six complaints.

He said that his department is investigating the incidents reported to it so far.

“Right now, we have several leads we are working and trying to locate some individuals that are of interest to us,” said Jarrell. “They are out, they are in circulation, and the merchants really need to be checking.”

Meanwhile, with the holiday shopping season upon us, Jarrell said area businesses also need to be on the lookout for possible credit card fraud.

“We are also requesting people check identification when they are using their credit card or debit card and make sure the person using it is the person who is supposed to be using it,” said Jarrell.

Anyone with questions or who needs to report an incident of credit card fraud or counterfeit money should contact their local law enforcement agency.
