Toccoa Police Arrest Three After Walking In On Armed Individuals

Three people are in custody after Toccoa Police responded to a city residence looking for an individual wanted in Franklin County.

Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell said that his department was notified that the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was looking for 25-year-old Corey Stephen Holbrooks of Toccoa on felony warrants in that county.

Jarrell said that Franklin County authorities notified Toccoa Police that Holbrooks may be at a Riley Street residence.

The chief said at that point, officers went to the residence looking for Holbrooks.

However, Jarrell said those officers ended up walking in on something else.

“Sergeant (Matt) Mealor, Corporal (David) Cannon, and Officer (Shawn) Bailey went to 78 Riley Street,” said Jarrell. “While approaching the residence, they were able to see in the window that Tyreun Gaines had a knife and was approaching James Dylan Jones.”

According to Jarrell, officers initially thought they were walking in on a burglary in progress.

However, he said officers then entered the residence and found that not to be the case.

“Officers entered the residence, at which point Jones pointed a handgun at Sergeant Mealor,” said Jarrell. “Basically at that point, Sergeant Mealor ordered Mr. Gaines to drop his knife and Mr. Jones to drop his firearm.”

Everyone complied with the police’s instructions and Jones and Gaines were both taken into custody.

Also, Jarrell said Holbrooks was found elsewhere in the residence and taken into custody on Franklin County’s charges and was also charged by Toccoa Police with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of Methamphetamine.

18-year-old Tyreun Jabreal Gaines and 22-year-old James Dylan Jones, both of Toccoa, were also arrested.

Gaines was charged with one count of Aggravated Assault, while Jones was charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of Marijuana, Trafficking Methamphetamine, and Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony.

Jarrell said officers found 48 grams of a clear, crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine on Jones at the time of his arrest.
