Toccoa Issues “Purple Heart City” Proclamation

August 5, 2014

Toccoa declares itself a Purple Heart city.

Last Monday, the Toccoa City Commission approved and read a proclamation that declared Toccoa a “Purple Heart City.”

Toccoa Mayor Gail Fry said it is something the city commission was glad to do.

The proclamation approved by city commissioners states that Toccoa appreciates the sacrifice that Purple Heart recipients made in defending freedoms and believes it is important that the city acknowledge them for their courage and show them honor and support.

The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in present use and was created by George Washington in 1782.

It is specifically awarded to members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded or paid the ultimate sacrifice in combat with a declared enemy of the United States of America.
