A foundation focused on artistic excellence and public outreach will bring a concert to Toccoa later this week.
The Toccoa Main Street program is sponsoring the concert from the Piatigorsky Foundation on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Toccoa.
Toccoa Main Street Events Coordinator Sharon Crosby said that this foundation contacted the city about having a show here this year.
“Their mission is to bring classical music to everyday people and everyday life,” said Crosby. “It is very important to them to come to smaller communities that may not have an opportunity for performances at this level and so we gladly agreed to have the performance there.”
Last season, the Foundation presented a mini-tour of 4 concerts in Georgia reaching over 575 people in Duluth, Hartwell, and Conyers and again this year, it says it aims to reach hundreds of people across Georgia to increase awareness and appreciation of classical music in communities throughout the state.
Performing on Friday at the Schaefer Center will be Pianist Doris Stevenson.
Among other accomplishments, she has soloed with the Boston Pops, and played at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
Crosby said she will play a variety of songs during the concert.
“Doris is going to be playing classical music, as well as holiday music and her performance, I am sure, will be fabulous,” said Crosby. “We are really looking forward to it.”
Crosby went on to say that she hopes a large crowd will turn out for Friday’s show.
“We invite everyone to come, especially those who have children who are interested in music,” said Crosby. “I think it will be a learning (experience).”
Friday’s concert at the Schaefer Center is free for the public to attend.
