Toccoa Commission Meets Today

The Toccoa City Commission is expected to consider the second reading of proposed changes to the city’s animal control ordinance at its meeting later today.

Toccoa City Commissioners meet at 5 p.m. at Toccoa City Hall.

City commissioners unanimously passed the first reading of the proposed animal control ordinance changes at their last meeting on September 12.

According to city officials, one of the proposed changes would state that a pet dealer could not be on any property in the city but their own without the written permission of the property owner.

City officials state the proposed new language would further require that pet dealer, if they were on someone’s else property in the city with permission, to have both a city business license and a license from the state Department of Agriculture.

Other proposed changes include bringing city code regarding rabies vaccination requirements in line with state law by including cats and not just dogs, giving animal control the ability to impound not just dogs, but cats in the city if they become a nuisance and adding language that would allow animal control to cite an owner of an animal in the city if that animal is deemed to be a nuisance.

Also during Monday’s meeting, Toccoa City Commissioners are expected to consider approval of members for a new cemetery advisory board that commissioners agreed to create earlier this month to help advise the city on rules and regulations for the city cemetery.

Finally, commissioners are scheduled to consider approval of a project resolution for a 2017 street resurfacing project.

The city is considering using a combination of state money and local SPLOST funds to work on about 26 city streets next year.

Prior to today’s 5 p.m. meeting, city commissioners will also meet for a work session at 4:30 p.m.

That work session will also take place at Toccoa City Hall.

Both the meeting and the work session are open to the public.
