Toccoa Commission Approves Appointments

The Toccoa-Stephens County Airport Authority will enter a new era of sorts after a new appointment was made at Monday’s Toccoa City Commission meeting.

On Monday, Toccoa City Commissioners unanimously appointed Bill Mercure to fill the seat on the Airport Authority currently held by Tommy Gilmer, whose term expires at the end of the year.

This new appointment is for a three-year term beginning on January 1.

Toccoa City Manager Billy Morse said that Gilmer decided it was time for him to step aside and let someone else take his place.

Morse said that Ed and Tommy Gilmer had served on the Airport Authority since its creation and he did not feel like it should go unnoticed.

He added that they deserve credit for helping to create the Airport that Toccoa and Stephens County has today.

City Commissioner Jeanette Jamieson suggested approving a resolution honoring them for their service.

Jamieson’s motion to do that passed unanimously.

Meanwhile, the city commission also unanimously approved several re-appointments Monday.

Dr. Beth Lowery was reappointed to the Health Board, Bob Snead was re-appointed as Municipal Court Judge, and the members of the city’s Ethics Panel were all re-appointed to new terms.

Those members are Thurston Estes, Woody Blasingame, Angie Garland, Peggy Snyder, and Gordon Telford.
