Toccoa City Commissioners Discuss Sidewalk Project

At last Monday’s Toccoa City Commission meeting representatives of KCI Engineering gave Toccoa City Commissioners a progress update on a prospective sidewalk that would be added from the Rose Lane/Fernside Drive area to Wal-Mart.

Toccoa City Commissioners has received a permit from the Georgia Department of Transportation or GDOT for the project.

The project is estimated to cost approximately $300,000, a portion of that cost the city is looking to forward fund. KCI Engineers caution that the estimate is rough due to possible draining structures and other possible obstructions. “With it being sidewalk, it is not a specific design. It’s more of a best field fit. There will be different things-mailboxes, back slopes, things like that. So we want to make sure we get the best fit.”

According to Toccoa City Manager Billy Morse the city has the funding to complete the first stage of the project that would take the sidewalk to the area of what is known as “the Wigwam”. Toccoa Mayor Terry Carter asked KCI Engineers what money would be saved by completing the entire project instead of in sections. KCI Engineers responded saying “If you phase it out over a two to three year period, material cost go up every year and construction and labor cost go up each year. So you are probably looking at about a 10% savings by completing the project.”

Toccoa City Commissioners agreed to pursue the forward funding of the sidewalk project.
