Toccoa City Commission To Meet Today

Toccoa City Commissioners are expected to make a decision on the future operation of the city-owned Pines Golf Course at their meeting later today.

The city commission meets at 5 p.m. today at Toccoa City Hall.

Over recent weeks, city commissioners have heard three different proposals for re-opening and operating the city-owned nine hole golf course off of Black Mountain Road.

The course has been closed since late August when the previous operator told the city he could no longer operate the course.

One proposal was for the course to come back under the city’s umbrella as a full-fledged city department.

Another proposal was from Terry Martin of the Atlanta area and his Tall Pines Management Group which proposed having either the city contract with him to re-develop the course or re-develop the course in a cost-sharing arrangement with the city. This proposal also noted the city could convert the course to a bike and walking park if it wanted to.

The final proposal was from Toccoa native David Shirley, who currently works at a course in Idaho and would be interested in running the course as the Superintendent, working for the city.

Toccoa City Commissioners have expressed an interest in getting the course re-open next summer.

Other items on the agenda for today’s Toccoa City Commission meeting include consideration of approval of a grant application to try to obtain funding for Toccoa By-pass water and sewer improvements and the monthly financial report.

Today’s Toccoa City Commission meeting also allows time for public comment.

Meanwhile, following the regular meeting, the city commission is scheduled to hold a work session at 5:30 p.m. with the city’s Alcohol Beverage Control board.

The work session is also open to the public.
