Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend Underway

No traffic fatalities have been reported to this point in Georgia over the Thanksgiving holiday travel period.

The official Georgia Department of Public Safety travel period for Thanksgiving began at 6 p.m. last night.

It lasts for 102 hours, concluding at midnight on Sunday

Last year during a 102-hour Thanksgiving holiday, the Georgia State Patrol investigated 619 traffic crashes across the state that resulted in 367 injuries and 10 fatalities.

In addition last year, troopers made 242 arrests for driving under the influence.

Troopers report that the primary contributing factors in most serious and fatal traffic crashes are speed, alcohol, and failing to use seat belts.

During this year’s Thanksgiving holiday, troopers will participate in a “Click It or Ticket” campaign to bring attention to proper seat belt use and “Operation C.A.R.E.”, a nationwide traffic safety campaign.

Just a reminder that the Georgia Department of Transportation has suspended construction-related lane closures on Interstates and major state routes through 10 p.m. on Sunday.

Also, a reminder that Toccoa City Hall and Stephens County government offices are both closed today and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

In the city of Toccoa, routes for garbage and recycling scheduled to be picked up today will be picked up on Monday.

Routes for garbage and recycling scheduled to be picked up on Friday will be picked up on Tuesday.

Commercial garbage will be picked up as usual, but yard waste and other items will not be picked up.
