Tennessee Man Arrested on Drug Charges in Lavonia

A Tennessee man faces drug charges in northeast Georgia after authorities arrested him earlier this month.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the North Georgia Drug Task Force and the Lavonia Police Department arrested 33-year-old Travis Shelton Courtner of Tennessee for Trafficking in Methamphetamine, Possession of Xanax, Giving False Name and Date of Birth, and two counts of Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer.

Courtner was arrested on August 14.

The GBI said that the Lavonia Police Department received a call of a suspicious vehicle with Tennessee license plates on it that had been running for two hours with nobody inside the vehicle.

Authorities said a Lavonia Police Officer then arrived on scene and observed a prescription pill lying in plain view inside the vehicle.

According to the GBI, the officer then encountered Courtner in the roadway, who provided them with a false name and he was arrested as a result.

At that point, the North Georgia Drug Task Force was called to the scene and that agency, along with Lavonia Police, initiated an investigation.

Authorities said that investigation resulted in the seizure of about one half-pound of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $9,000.

The GBI said that the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.
