Tax Season Starts Today

It’s that time of the year again as a new tax filing season is set to start today.

The Internal Revenue Service has announced it will begin accepting returns today.

IRS Spokesman Mark Green said they are expecting most tax filers to file electronically again this year.

“The good news about this is that most taxpayers will be filing electronically so there is no need to file a paper return or get your tax return together prior to that date,” said Green.

Green noted a number of tax credits that were due to expire December 31 have been extended into the 2016 tax filing season.

Also, Green said this year tax payers will have a little extra time to file their returns.

“That is due to Emancipation Day being celebrated in the District of Columbia, which allows all taxpayers to forego April 15 and file their return by April 18 at midnight,” said Green.

Green said taxpayers should also make sure they have any additional tax forms ready before filing their returns.

They include your W-2 form from your employer, Forms 1099 from banks and other payers, and Form 1095-A from the healthcare marketplace for those claiming the premium tax credit.
