A number of Stephens County High School band students will head to camp this summer after receiving a scholarship.
The Steve Stovall Music Scholarship Foundation presented scholarships to a number of students at the Stephens County High School Band’s annual Spring Concert last Thursday in the Tugaloo Center for the Performing Arts.
Steve Stovall Music Scholarship Foundation Chairman Brent Stovall said that eight students in all will receive scholarships this year.
“This year, we are going to send six deserving young men and women to the University of Georgia Marching Band Camp,” said Stovall. “Also, we will be sending two drum majors to the Drum Major Camp at the University of Georgia.”
This year’s award winners announced Thursday night were Cydney Gunter, Gray Hunter, Sarah Weaver, Ian Allen, Ethan Fernandez, and Garrett Taylor.
The two drum majors for this upcoming marching band season who will also receive scholarships will be announced at the band banquet coming up on May 27.
Stovall said the foundation is pleased to continue what is a long-standing tradition in Stephens County by giving the scholarships.
“The first scholarships were given in 1975 in honor of Steve Stovall, who tragically lost his life on the band field,” said Stovall.
Over the years, more than $170,000 has been given to support the band program and its students.
