Stephens Co. Wins 2-1 in 10 Innings

The Stephens County Indians open Region 8-AAAA baseball play with a win.

In a game with twists and turns befitting Friday the 13th, Stephens County threw out the tying run at the plate twice, including to end the game, to beat White County, 2-1, Friday night in Cleveland.

Scoreless through nine innings, the Indians broke through in the top of the 10th when Ben Cleveland hit a solo home run to make it 1-0 in favor of Stephens County.

The Indians made it 2-0 when Jacob Haddock, who reached after being hit by a pitch, scored on a throwing error.

Then in the bottom of the 10th, White County loaded the bases with nobody out and Trevor Morgan scored on a strikeout wild pitch to make it 2-1.

With runners on second and third and one out, Davis McCall fielded a grounder and threw out Joel Pritchett trying to score for the second out.

Then with two out, White County tried to steal home, but the Indians made the play and got the final out at the plate.

Mason Long pitched three innings of relief to get the win for Stephens County after Evan Rumsey threw seven shutout innings as the Indians’ starter.

John Henry Mullis took the loss for White County after Joel Pritchett started and threw seven shutout innings.

Stephens County moves to 6-3 overall on the season and 1-0 in Region 8-AAAA.

The two teams will play again on Monday at the Reservation.
