Stephens County will mark Veterans Day with an event this weekend.
The annual Veterans’ Day Observance in Stephens County will take place on Sunday at 2 p.m. on the lawn of the historic Stephens County Courthouse in downtown Toccoa.
It is hosted each year by the veterans’ organizations of Stephens County, including the American Legion Post 104, Marine Corp Detachment 1303, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4346.
In case of inclement weather, the event will take place in the Mitchell Allen Meeting Room at the historic train depot in downtown Toccoa.
For more information, call William Tucker at 706-886-4636 or 706-244-3209.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District will waive day-use fees for veterans, active and reserve component service members, and their families at Corps-operated recreation areas at Lakes Hartwell and J. Strom Thurmond for Veterans Day weekend, Saturday through Monday.
The day-use fee waiver requires only verbal confirmation of service.
Recreation areas at the Richard B. Russell Dam and Lake are not Corps-managed. However, other agencies managing recreation areas on Corps lands are encouraged but not required to offer the Veterans Day waiver of fees in areas they manage.
The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services or fees for specialized facilities, such as picnic shelters.
The Corps says it began the “Fee Free on Veterans Day” initiative in 2006 to support and honor the men and women who have served our nation and the armed forces, and to encourage them and their families to visit and enjoy the Corps’ many recreation sites.
