Stephens Co. Still Working on Bonds for SPLOST Road Work

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers says she hopes to have a final bond proposal ready for county commissioners to consider possibly in the next month or so.

The county is looking to issue up to $4.5 million in bonds to forward fund SPLOST VI road projects planned for the county.

SPLOST money would then re-pay the bonds.

County officials said the road work is needed, noting that right now, potholes are a major problem in the county.

Ayers said that SPLOST road work plans should help with some of the pothole problems.

“Some of the pothole issues are on some of the roads that are in critical condition that are in the first wave of paving and resurfacing (for SPLOST),” said Ayers.

Also, Ayers said that while much of the SPLOST road work is being done by contractors, that will allow county crews to work on potholes in other areas of the county.

Stephens County Commission Chair Dennis Bell said it is a problem that needs to be solved as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Ayers said that overall, SPLOST VI is going well so far.
