Stephens Co. Schools Announce Make up Day

The Stephens County School System is announcing a make-up day to catch up after last month’s winter weather caused numerous cancellations.

Stephens County School Superintendent Sherrie Whiten said that students will now attend school on February 17th.

“We are trying to make sure our Spring Break is protected,” said Whiten.  “Also, our last day of school is a Friday and we do not want to add any days.”

While the school system missed a number of other days due to the winter weather in January, Whiten said she thinks the school system is in good shape when it comes to not having to make up more time if there is no more winter weather.

“The state will actually let you forgive so many days and when you look at the minute requirement, hopefully we should be fine,” said Whiten.

Whiten did say that if there is more bad weather this winter that forces school cancellations and more time has to be made up, the school system would examine options in an effort to avoid taking days away from Spring Break and also avoid adding days to the end of the year.
