Stephens Co. School System Looks To Sell Unused Property

The Stephens County school system is putting some property on the market.

On Tuesday, the Stephens County Board of Education voted unanimously to put property owned by the school system near the intersection of Skyline Drive and Rose Lane up for sale.

That property mostly fronts Skyline Drive, though a small part of it fronts Rose Lane.

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey said that the school system has no use for the property moving forward.

“We wanted to be good neighbors to our community and that is not a piece of property that looks like would be very usable for the school system,” said Dorsey.

He said that the property is tucked into a neighborhood and while at one point the school system talked about a bus barn with a fuel depot, he added that is not the place for one.

Dorsey went on to say that he feels everyone will benefit by the school system seeking someone to purchase the property and find a better use for it.

“It puts it back on the tax digest,” said Dorsey. “Hopefully, someone will have time and commitment for that neighborhood for that particular parcel.”

The property is about 15 acres in size and the Stephens County Tax Assessor’s Office values the property at

According to information from the Tax Assessor’s Office, the school system purchased the property as part of a larger tract in

Dorsey said that the school system does not currently have a buyer for the property.

He did say that the school system can follow a normal property sale process if it so chooses.

“We will just advertise that we are interested (in selling),” said Dorsey.

In other action from Tuesday’s Stephens County Board of Education meeting, the board unanimously approved the CTAE budget for Fiscal Year 2016, along with approving some changes on board and school system policies that were discussed during Thursday’s work session.
