Stephens Co. School System Approves Meal Prices

Some meal prices will be going up next year in the Stephens County school system.

The Stephens County Board of Education approved meal prices for the 2016-2017 school year at their meeting last Tuesday.

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey said that these meal price changes will not affect everyone in the school system.

“This does not impact elementary or middle, that will still be free,” said Dorsey. “It does impact the high school students and staff and visitors.”

At Stephens County High School this coming year, a student breakfast will go from $1 to $1.25 and a student lunch will go from $2 to $2.20.

School officials said the student meal prices at the high school are similar to a number of other area counties.

When looking at a group of school systems including Banks, Franklin, Dawson, Lumpkin, and Pickens, figures provided by Stephens County show that those systems are charging between $1.30 and $1.50 next year for breakfast and between $2.10 and $2.65 for lunch.

Elsewhere, breakfast prices for teachers and staff will stay $1.75 per breakfast next year and a visitors’ breakfast will still cost $2.

However, the lunch price for teachers and staff is going up from $2.75 to $3 this coming year and a visitors’ lunch price is going from $3.25 to $3.50.

And again, meals at the elementary schools, 5th Grade Academy, and Middle School will still be served at no cost to students.
