Stephens Co. Recreation Department To Add Dog Park

Part of the Stephens County Recreation Department appears to be headed to the dogs.

On Tuesday, the Stephens County Commission unanimously approved a motion to provide a dog park at the Recreation Department on Rose Lane and approved a fencing bid for the park by Toccoa Winsupply in the amount of $6,225.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers said this is something that she and Recreation Director Richard Adams have thought about for some time.

They said a lot of people bring their dogs to the Recreation Department already to use the walking trail and this will provide people somewhere to take their dogs where they do not have to be on a leash.

Adams said that there will be two separate areas in the dog park, one for small dogs and one for large dogs.

“This will consist of about 2.25 to 2.50 acres,” said Adams. “It is an isolated corner. Most of them do not put shade trees. We will have shade trees on ours.”

He said that the area of the Recreation Department that they will be using for the dog park has not had any other planned use.

Also, county officials said there will be plenty of signage noting that dog owners are fully responsible and liable for their dogs and must be with their dogs when they are at the dog park.

Adams said he thinks it is a great idea that will put Stephens County ahead as a small county.

“Not only does it benefit the puppies and dogs, it will be good for the people to get out and exercise and fellowship in our community,” said Adams.

Multiple county commissioners said that they fully support the idea.

There is no word yet on when the dog park will be complete.
