Stephens Co. Purchases Dump Trucks

Stephens County road crews will get some new dump trucks to help them do their job.

Tuesday, Stephens County Commissioners unanimously approved a motion to purchase two 2016 Freightliner tandem dump trucks and a 2016 Freightliner single axle dump truck.

According to Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers, the dump trucks that the county is currently using are very old.

“Their trucks are 1984’s, 1990’s, 1982’s, anywhere from 220,000 miles to 360,000 miles,” said Ayers.

Stephens County Commission Chairman Dennis Bell said the new dump trucks are very needed.

Ayers said that it is a safety issue and also an issue of making sure that the county crews can get their work done as these trucks are heavily used.

“All summer long, we struggled mobilizing the road crew because a lot of their equipment is extremely aged,” said Ayers.

The two tandem dump trucks will cost the county $137,464.12 each and the single axle dump truck will cost the county $100,627.44.

Stephens County will borrow the money over a five year term from South State Bank at a fixed interest of 2.082 percent.

The loan will be paid back with monies from SPLOST VI.
