Stephens County will mark Memorial Day with its annual observance later today.
Local veterans’ organizations will host this year’s Memorial Day ceremony in Stephens County today at 11 a.m. on the lawn of the historic Stephens County Courthouse.
The American Legion Post 104, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4346, and Marine Corps Detachment 1303 are all hosting the event.
American Legion Post 104 Adjutant William Tucker said that the observance will once again feature presentations of wreaths honoring veterans who paid the supreme sacrifice.
Tucker said everyone is invited to the courthouse lawn for the event.
“Mrs. Adele Lyles is going to be our speaker,” said Tucker. “She is a native of Toccoa and a retired school teacher, so we are looking forward to having her as a speaker.”
Meanwhile, Stephens County government offices and Toccoa City Hall are both closed today in observance of Memorial Day.
In the city of Toccoa, garbage and recycling routes that are scheduled to be picked up on Monday, May 26th will be picked up on Tuesday, May 27th.
Commercial garbage will be picked up as usual, but yard waste and other items will not be collected.
Finally, Stephens County Schools are in session today as a make-up day from winter weather earlier this year.
