Stephens Co. Grand Jury Issues Indictments
A Stephens County grand jury indicts a man on rape, child molestation, and other charges.
Tuesday, the grand jury issued a true bill of indictment against 34-year-old Joe Terrell Shelton, Jr. of Stephens County and Sheriff Randy Shirley says Shelton, Jr. was taken into custody later Tuesday.
The indictment lists 11 counts in all against Shelton, Jr.
Those charges include rape, aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation, child molestation, aggravated sexual battery, cruelty to children in the first degree, and others.
Also indicted by the grand jury on Tuesday was 57-year-old Bobby Byargeon of Toccoa.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Byargeon’s arrest last month.
The true bill of indictment issued Tuesday by the grand jury lists 19 counts against Byargeon.
Those charges include aggravated child molestation, aggravated sexual battery, sexual exploitation of children, and cruelty to children in the first degree, and others.
The GBI said Byargeon worked as a jailer in Stephens County for seven months.

Kevin Nicole Gober – Robbery By Force, Theft by Taking, Battery
Rebecca Lillian Wagner – Fraud in Obtaining Controlled Substance (Criminal Attempt)
Bradley Arthur Wilt – Aggravated Assault
William Daniel Fowler, Jr. – Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, Interference with Government Property, Interference with Custody, Driving While License Suspended
Joshua Lebron Mitchell – Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
Justin Todd Tatum – Cruelty to Children in the First Degree, Battery, Family Violence
Judy Palmer – Making a False Statement
