Stephens Co. Commission To Meet Today

The Stephens County Commission is expected to finalize its Fiscal Year 2016 budget later today at its regularly scheduled meeting.

County commissioners will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the second-floor courtroom of the historic Stephens County Courthouse in downtown Toccoa.

During the meeting, county commissioners are expected to consider a motion to adopt the Fiscal Year 2016 budget.

The Fiscal Year 2016 budget is set to total about $21.62 million, with about $12.97 million of that in the general fund budget and about $5.3 million in SPLOST funds.

The general fund is about $70,000 more than what was budgeted for the fiscal year ending next week.

Also, the proposed budget calls for a .25 mill decrease, taking the county’s millage rate from 13.66 to 13.41 mills, as well as a two percent cost of living increase for county government employees.

Prior to the vote on the Fiscal Year 2016 budget, Stephens County Commissioners will hold a second public hearing on the proposed budget to start the meeting at 5:30 p.m.

After the public hearing on the budget, the county commission will then move into a work session to discuss items on the business meeting agenda.

Besides the budget, some of the other items on the agenda include consideration of a list of roads as primary for SPLOST VI funds for 2015, consideration of a motion to declare the old jail as surplus property, and consideration of a motion to enter into an Information Technology consulting agreement.

The business meeting, where commissioners vote on agenda items, will follow right after the work session.

Today’s Stephens County Commission meeting is open to the public.
