Stephens Co. Commission Gets Road Update

Stephens County road crews continue to make progress through the county’s priority list of summer roads.

On Tuesday, Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers told county commissioners that county road crews were finishing up on Riverdale Road and would be moving to Wolf Pit Road next.

This summer, the county set out to complete work on six roads deemed by commissioners as a priority.

Those roads are Riverdale Road, Wolf Pit Road, Rock Creek Road, and three gravel roads, Freedom Drive, Ward’s Creek Road, and Swilling Road.

Ayers said that things are going well so far towards getting that work done.

“We have looked at the schedule for the whole summer and right now, unless we have a monsoon that lasts for eight weeks, they will be able to get all of six of these roads in and some of the secondary roads that were on your list,” said Ayers.

On Tuesday, Stephens County Commissioners took up a bid proposal for 2.2 miles of resurfacing and leveling on Rock Creek Road.

Ayers said that the county’s recommendation was to reject the low bid of C.W. Matthews and do the work in-house with county road crews.

“Your low bidder is C.W. Matthews, $288,200, but you will notice your in-house estimate is quite a bit cheaper,” said Ayers.

The in-house estimate came in at $192,430.

Stephens County Commissioners voted unanimously to reject all bids and do the work in-house with county crews.

Commissioners also commended the road department for the work they have done so far this summer on the roads.
