Stephens Co. Commission Approves Partial Street Abandonment

Stephens County Commissioners agree to abandon part of a county street in an effort to keep people from dumping and loitering.

On Tuesday, the county commission voted unanimously to abandon part of Crump Street, which is off of South Pond Street.

Last month, John Vance appeared before commissioners to talk about possibly abandoning the end of the street that provides access to his property.

Vance owns the property at the end of the street and said that people have been driving down to the end of the road and dumping on to his property.

He said he is also concerned about loitering and the risk of illegal activity and had inquired about having the end of the street, which only provides access to his property, abandoned so he could block it off to keep these things from happening.

Stephens County Attorney Brian Ranck said once the part of the road in question is abandoned, he may do that if he wishes.

“It does not have to be blocked,” said Ranck. “At this point, Mr. Vance can legally block it since it is not a public road.”

The part of Crump Street being abandoned is only the end of the street that adjoins Vance’s property. The rest of Crump Street will remain part of the county road system.

A public hearing was held on the abandonment prior to the vote on Tuesday.

Nobody spoke in opposition to the request.
