Stephens Co. BOE Sets Tentative Millage Rate

The Stephens County Board of Education plans to leave the millage rate at 20 mills for a second year.

At a special called meeting on Monday, all board members present voted unanimously to set the tentative millage rate for this year at 20 mills.

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey said that the 20 mill tax rate will result in a small decline in school taxes levied this year.

Dorsey said that the Stephens County school system will levy $11,766,399 in school taxes this year if the millage rate stays at 20 mills.

He said that represents a decrease of $128,446 from the amount of school taxes levied last year.

That is due to a drop in the drop in the county’s tax digest.

Stephens County has seen its tax digest drop for each of the last five years, according to the millage rate announcement published by the school board.

The Stephens County Board of Education must still take a final vote to officially set the millage rate at 20 mills.

That meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 13 at 7:30 a.m. at the Stephens County School System administrative offices on Mize Road.
