The Stephens County Board of Education is expected to meet with the four people seeking the board seat vacated last month by Jerry Steele during a meeting later today.
The board is expected to meet with Jimmy Howard, Inger Neal, and Steve Tilley during a work session later today.
As for an original fourth candidate, Rodney Moore had submitted a letter of interest. However, Stephens County School Superintendent Sherrie Whiten said Thursday that Moore has chosen to remove his name from consideration.
The school board will begin its work session at 5:30 p.m. in the administrative offices of the Stephens County School System on Mize Road in Toccoa.
According to Whiten, the board will ask each of the four candidates a standard set of questions put together by the school board members themselves.
The Board of Education is expected to make its choice for the seat at its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Whoever the Stephens County Board of Education selects will serve the remainder of Jerry Steele’s term on the board, which runs through the end of 2014.
Steele held the District 1, Post 2 seat on the Stephens County Board of Education for over a decade.
He resigned from the school board at the end of June to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest as his son, Sandy Steele, took over as principal at Stephens County High School at the beginning of July.
Once the Board of Education selects its new member, it will also have to select one member to serve as Board Chair.
Jerry Steele had held that position until leaving the board and last month, the Board of Education decided to wait to elect a new Chair until the new board member was in place.
Today’s Stephens County Board of Education work session is open to the public.
