Stephens BOE Approves Spending Resolution

The Stephens County Board of Education has another monthly spending resolution in place.

Tuesday, the school board unanimously approved an August spending resolution.

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey said that a monthly spending resolution allows the school system to operate and spend funds on a monthly basis until an official budget is approved and in place for the fiscal year.

The current fiscal year started on July 1 and the school system used a similar resolution for July.

Stephens County Board of Education members are expected to consider adoption of the budget for this fiscal year at a called meeting on Monday, August 3.

Dorsey said while the spending resolution may not be needed in August, approving it is a precautionary measure.

“While that is the first day of the month and at this point, we are not anticipating anything different (with the budget),” said Dorsey. “But, should it not be approved by the board, we would then need a spending resolution. It is a safety net.”

Under monthly spending resolutions, the school system is permitted to spend up to one-twelfth of the amount of the final amended budget for the previous fiscal year that ended on June 30.

Dorsey said the school system met that target for the month of July.

The Stephens County school system also used monthly spending resolutions to cover expenses in calendar year 2014 from July until the Fiscal Year 2015 budget was approved in September 2014.
