Special Election To Be Held To Fill Seat of Late Lavonia Councilman

With the passing of Councilman Don Canady, the Lavonia City Council now has a vacant seat to fill.

Canady passed away earlier this month, leaving two and a half years still left in his term.

Recently, Lavonia City Manager Gary Fesperman announced a special election will take place June 16th at Lavonia City Hall to fill Canady’s seat.

Fesperman said a special election is required by Lavonia’s city charter.

“The charter states that should we have a vacancy where there is less than three months left in the remaining term, we can appoint someone. If it is more than that, we have to have a special election,” Fesperman said. “Since Don Canady had approximately two and half years left in his term, this requirement must be fulfilled with a special election.”

Qualifying for the Post 1 City Council seat in Lavonia will be held Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Lavonia City Hall.

The qualifying fee is $35.

Meanwhile, voters will cast their ballots at Lavonia City Hall on June 16 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Early voting will begin May 27 and run through June 12 at the Franklin County Board of Elections and Registrations Office in Carnesville.

Anyone who wants to vote in this special Lavonia city election but is not registered, may register at the elections office in Carnesville by close of business on May 18.

Should a run-off be required, the run-off election will take place on July 14.
