Smoke Continues to Cover NE Ga.

Smoke continues to spread over Stephens and surrounding counties in northeast Georgia from wildfires to the north and the west.

Stephens County Volunteer Fire Services Chief Jamey Gettys said that if people see flames, they should call 911, but otherwise understand the smoke will be a nuisance for the next few days.

Also, Gettys said Stephens County is under a burn ban until there is rain.

He said people can have a camp fire, but says outdoor debris burning is not allowed.

Gettys went on to say that if someone does have a recreational fire, they need to keep an eye on it and make sure it is out cold before leaving it unattended.

Some of those fires are now in northeast Georgia.

Wednesday night, the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office reported several fires in two areas that fire personnel were working to contain.

According to Rabun County authorities, one of them is on Georgia Highway 28 in Rabun County and the other is in the Tallulah River Road area.

Rabun authorities are terming the fires as suspicious, and have put out a look out for a white male driving a dark blue colored SUV that was seen in the area and could be connected to starting the fires.

Meanwhile, numerous fires continue to burn across the mountains of western North Carolina.

Reports indicate that hundreds of firefighteres there are working to contain somewhere around a dozen or more fires now.
