Shirley Appointed to State Board

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley will serve on a state board after his appointment by Governor Nathan Deal.

The governor has appointed Shirley to serve as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Sheriff’s Retirement Fund of Georgia.

Shirley said it is an honor to be named to this board.

“There are actually six that serve on this board,” said Shirley. “I know each of them, so I look forward to serving and just to have an opportunity to see how it is managed and what small part I can play as sheriff of Stephens County.”

According to Shirley, his first meeting as a member of the board will be next month.

The board meets quarterly.

The Sheriff’s Retirement Fund was set up by the state of Georgia in 1963.

According to the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association, the purpose of the Fund is to provide a source of revenue for the purpose of providing benefits to the elected officials serving in the capacity of Sheriff of the counties of Georgia through the receipt of monthly pension benefits once their retirement goal is reached.

A board composed of the Director of the Office of Treasury and Fiscal Services; one former Sheriff who is receiving benefits from the fund; and four active Sheriffs who are members of the fund administer the fund.

All board members are appointed by the Governor of Georgia.
